Do I Really Need an Accountant if I Have a Small Business?

By Melissa De Bedout, CPA, CFE, CAA  ·  July 29, 2026  ·  2 min read

Most owners who ask me this are doing their own books, and doing fine, until the business grows past the point where fine is enough. The honest answer depends on where your business is right now.

When doing it yourself works

Early on, a simple business with one income stream and a handful of expenses does not need a full-time accountant. Good software and discipline can carry you. Paying for help you do not need yet is its own kind of waste.

The signs it stops working

The moment to bring in an accountant is when the business gets complicated faster than your spreadsheet keeps up. A few signals:

  • Multiple income streams, or an S-Corp election on the table
  • Employees or contractors, and the payroll and 1099 rules that come with them
  • Income that swings, so you cannot guess your tax bill
  • Nights spent on bookkeeping instead of running the business
  • An IRS notice you do not understand

The pattern I see

Owners wait until the business is “making real money” to hire a CPA. By then, the decisions that would have saved the most tax have already been made. The best planning happens before the growth, not after the tax bill.

What an accountant fixes

The value is not filing a return. It is clean books that make decisions possible, a structure that fits your income, tax planning that happens during the year instead of every April, and someone who catches the expensive mistakes before they happen.

You do not hire an accountant to do last year’s taxes. You hire one to change next year’s.

So, do you need one?

If your business is simple and small, maybe not yet. If it is growing, has employees, crosses state or country lines, or the tax bill keeps surprising you, the cost of good help is smaller than the cost of guessing. If you are not sure which side of that line you are on, that is a short conversation, and a useful one. Book a consultation.
